A top veterinarian has warned that heatstroke symptoms in dogs can appear rapidly and, without immediate action, your pet’s life could be in serious danger. Dr Hillary Pearce, a vet working with Hills Pets Nutrition, stresses that heatstroke is a life-threatening emergency and needs urgent treatment.
“Excessive panting and restlessness are early signs of heatstroke,” she says, adding that dogs may appear panicked with heavy drooling. “Eventually, if left in this state they will collapse and can very quickly die.”
If your dog begins panting uncontrollably or seems agitated and restless, you must act fast – and the solution starts with cold water.
“It is absolutely imperative that your dog is cooled down as quickly as [possible],” Dr Pearce explains. Soaking them in cold water or wrapping them in cold, wet towels is the fastest and most effective method.
Once cooled, your dog should be taken to the vet immediately for further treatment, including fluids and temperature management.
These simple actions can make the difference between life and death in those first crucial minutes.
Flat-faced breeds like bulldogs and pugs are especially vulnerable, and their risk of overheating is significantly higher.
“Brachycephalic dogs will start panting at much lower temperatures than normal dogs,” says Dr Pearce.
For these breeds, even a short walk in the sun can be dangerous, so exercise during the coolest parts of the day is a must.
Avoid intense activities like fetch or running that prevent your dog from regulating its own pace. Instead, choose shaded paths and allow your dog to explore at a comfortable, natural rhythm.
Finally, always be aware of hidden dangers, especially hot pavements and parked cars – two major culprits in summer-related canine deaths.
“If the ground is too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws,” warns Dr Pearce. She also reminds owners never to leave dogs in a vehicle, even with the windows cracked, as internal temperatures rise rapidly.
Cooling mats, closed blinds, and chilled water bowls can help dogs stay comfortable indoors without air conditioning. With thoughtful care and quick responses, owners can protect their pets and ensure a safe, happy spring and summer.
