A couple of years ago, Edward Berger’s remake of the anti-war epic All Quiet on the Western Front won four Oscars.
But did you know it was the third award-winning adaptation of the classic 1929 novel?
The 1930 original film is considered one of the most realistic depictions of World War 1 warfare ever made.
The story follows the life of an idealistic young German soldier. Hungry for adventure, he enlists in the German Army at the outbreak of the conflict.
However, it’s not long before he faces the true horrors of war and does all he can to survive.
The first film adaptation went on to win three Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and was voted the seventh-best American epic of all time by the American Film Institute.
Having entered the public domain on New Year’s Day, 1930’s All Quiet on the Western Front is available to stream for free.
You can watch it now on Fawesome, an ad-supported video on demand (AVOD) channel. The app, which can be downloaded on Smart TVs and phones for casting, offers films to watch for free with ads.
